Outsourcing bookkeeping should make records easier to understand, not place them behind a provider’s private login. A clear arrangement explains who owns the accounts, which records are needed and how differences will be resolved.
Understand the Research Context
The IASB issued the third edition of the IFRS for SMEs Accounting Standard in February 2025. Whether a business uses it depends on the applicable reporting framework and local adoption; this article does not determine that choice. Read the IFRS Foundation: Third Edition of the IFRS for SMEs Standard for the original context. The practical questions below are Best10Companies editorial analysis, not the source organization’s checklist or an endorsement.
What to Ask Before You Commit
Describe the transaction types, payment channels and reporting frequency before asking for a price. Ask how missing documents are flagged and how bank reconciliations are reviewed. Agree the cutoff dates and responsibilities for approvals. Keep management access to the underlying system and ask for an export and handover plan. Your business remains responsible for decisions made from its records, even when another team prepares them.
| Check | Evidence to Request |
|---|---|
| Record flow | Documents, cutoffs and missing-item handling |
| Control | Reconciliation and approval responsibilities |
| Access | Business ownership and export capability |
A Practical Exercise
Use a sample month with a refund, a missing receipt and a late supplier invoice. Ask each provider to explain how those items would appear in its workflow.
Build a Clearer Shortlist
Use the same brief when you compare companies offering Finance & Accounting services. Keep the answers, assumptions and exclusions together so that a later decision is based on comparable information. When you are ready to post your requirement, describe the scope and the evidence you need rather than requesting a general promise of results.
